More Flexibility in Graduation Plans for Texas

At the State Board of Education meeting on November 4, 2009, they gave preliminary approval to revisions to two high school graduation plans to bring them in line with the Recommended High School Program.  TIVA lobbied this past session for more flexibility in Texas' graduation plans that would allow all students more opportunities to pursue their educational and career goals.  Click here to read more.

Common Core Standards Initiative

12/8/09:  Commissioner of Education Robert Scott applauded the comments of congressmen and witnesses who today acknowledged the risk of making the Common Core Standards Initiative mandatory standards for all public schools.  Those of you who attended the 2009 TIVA Summer Conference will remember Commissioner Scott's comments saying that states should be in charge of their own public school standards.  Please read the TEA press release by clicking here.

Program to Improve and Expand T-STEM Academies

10/15/09: RICHARDSON – Gov. Rick Perry today announced a $160 million initiative to expand the number and scope of Texas Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (T-STEM) academies, an initiative he established in 2005. T-STEM academies have successfully provided young Texans with the resources they need to succeed in the increasingly competitive global economy.
