GI Bill to add new education benefits

7/24/09: Last summer Congress passed the new Post-9/11 GI Bill to add new education benefits for those serving in the Armed Forces. This new program goes into effect on August 1, 2009. Over the past few months, a number of questions about how the new benefits apply to those military professionals who would like to pursue postsecondary career and technical education and training.

American Graduation Initiative

7/14/09: President Obama unveiled his eagerly anticipated American Graduation Initiative. The initiative, previewed in ACTE's July 6 Legislative Update, would provide $12 billion over 10 years to improve community and technical colleges and postsecondary programs leading to industry-recognized credentials, certificates and associate degrees.

U.S. House Appropriations Funds Carl D. Perkins - $1.27 Billion


On Friday, July 17, the House Appropriations Committee finalized its Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 funding bill for the programs housed under the departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education. In this bill, the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act (Perkins) is funded at $1.27 billion.

SBOE approves new CTE curriculum standards

7/17/09:  The State Board of Education today gave final approval to new curriculum standards for about 190 Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses.
     The standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), update and streamline CTE courses offered in Texas public schools. In recent years, more than 600 CTE courses were available to be taught in Texas schools.
     The updated standards were written by teams of Texas secondary and postsecondary educators, business leaders and community members.

New Graduation Requirements for 2010-11

July 16, 2009 TEA Update:  House Bill (HB) 3, passed by the 81st Texas Legislature, includes changes to graduation requirements that will take effect on Sept. 1, 2009.  The legislation does not permit the SBOE to designate a specific course or a specific number of credits in the enrichment curriculum as requirements for the recommended program, except as explicitly allowed in statute.
